The Valet (released in French-speaking countries as La Doublure) is a 2006 French comedy film written and directed by Francis Veber. Movie Night - La Cité De La Peur
27/03/09 13:41

Probably a classic of the french comedy movies.
La Cité de la peur, or Le film de Les Nuls, is a French comedy film written by the comedy group Les Nuls and directed by Alain Berbérian in 1994. The movies parodies big budget American films (Basic Instinct, Pretty Woman and the Terminator, among others, are directly spoofed) and relies heavily on puns and wordplay, which makes it somewhat inaccessible for non-French speakers. Ok so Wikipedia says that it's inaccessible for non-french speakers... Well, we'll see :)

Movie : Paris, je t'aime / Paris, I love you
10/11/08 19:52

Come and join us for our last movie of the year!
"Paris, je t'aime" is a series of 18 short movies about the citie of lights. Each of these movies has been directed by big names, such as the Cohen brothers, Wes Craven, or Gus Van Sant. They show you their perspective on the different suburbs of Paris.
The movie also boasts an incredible cast, with stars from France and abroad (without Jean Reno though, haha). You will be surprised! My personal favourite is Steve Buscemi as a lost tourist.
This movie is so good, that the Americans decided to copy it, and make a "New York, I love you"!
Be aware this movie has been rated MA in Australia for language and brief drug use, yay! Oh, and ladies, Toni Compagnone may make an appearance, haha ;-)

Movie: Wasabi
26/10/08 13:53

Ever wanted to see Jean Reno play DDR? lol
Hubert (Jean-Reno) is a French policeman with very sharp methods. After being forced to take 2 months off by his boss, who doesn't share his view on working methods, he goes back to Japan, where he used to work 19 years ago, to settle the probate of his girlfriend who left him suddenly without a trace.
Turns out she left him, among other things, a daughter (Ryoko Hirosue) who's being pursued by the Yakusa. Big deal, that's not enough to scare our Jean Reno!
Hirosue is absolutely funky, Reno is as cold as 'the professional', and his sidekick (Michel Muller) is having fun just being part of the action.
This is a great Action-Comedy. As you may have guessed already, Jean Reno is one of my favourite actors!
See you on Tuesday!

Movie: Les Visiteurs
13/10/08 00:14

Our next movie should have been on the 21st, but it's the day of the GLP speaker series. So we're advancing the next movie to this week, and then we'll keep our fortnightly movie schedule.
'Les Visiteurs' was replaced by 'Le Dîner de Cons' last Tuesday. Not really a pity since they are both great movies.
'Les Visiteurs' is a great comedy. I can't believe it's already 15 years old. I've just watched the first 20min again, it was so good! The story is about two men, a nobleman (Jean Reno) and his squire (Christian Clavier) from the Middle Ages who by some 'unfortunate accident' get sent to the year 1993. Their quest to go back to their own time is simply hilarious.
You may have seen the lame American version of this movie. FORGET IT. The original is a hundred times better.
REMEMBER THAT MOVIES ARE NOW ON TUESDAYS. WE HAVE ALSO MOVED ROOMS.

Here is another #1 quality movie, from 2004. I guarantee you will like it.
See how one man changes the lives of orphan boys from a difficult school with the help of music. The movie is set in 1949 rural France.
I know it sounds really serious, I thought so too, until I saw it. This award-winning film is beautiful, and will definitely charm you.
